Vladimir Ivanoff is een saxofonist in een Russisch circus. Tijdens een Amerikaanse tournee maakt Vladimir kennis met de westerse levensstijl tijdens een bezoekje aan het superchique warenhuis Bloomingdale's in New York. Hij gelooft zijn ogen niet, zoveel keuze en geen rij voor de winkel! Hij besluit ter plekke dat hij hier nooit meer weg wil en vraagt politiek asiel aan. Wonende in een overvol flatje in Harlem ontdekt Vladimir dat het westerse leven ook heel hard en koud kan zijn.
